Blackpool Polar Bears were formed in 2000 starting with 8 members. Years on, we have now 100+ members. We are run by a very strong team of dedicated volunteers and have an excellent relationship with Blackpool Council who support Blackpool Polar Bears by giving us use of Moor Park Pool every Sunday from 9am – 12pm along with fully qualified swimming teachers and lifeguards.

We are affiliated to the Special Olympics (Great Britain) and swim as a part of the North West Region Team at both Regional and National events.

We are also affiliated to N.A.S.C.H. (National Association of Swimming Clubs) who ensure we have the necessary Public Liability insurances and with whom we insure all our specialist equipment.

Our strong committee and volunteer helpers in the water are all DBS Cleared through Special Olympics (Great Britian).

We first took part in the UK Special Olympics Summer Games held in Glasgow in 2005 where 5 members brought back 3 Gold, 5 Silver and 3 Bronze medals.. Our swimmers have participated in each of the scheduled championships since this date as well as taking part in Special Olympics and NASCH regional swimming competitions throughout the year.

One of our swimmers represented Great Britian at the 2019 World Special Olympics. In addition our coach (Emma Inglis) was the Head Coach for the GB swimming team at these games.

The club holds 2 club galas per year and we also organise trips and parties and have an Annual Presentation when all members who attend receive a trophy for their achievement.

We work towards the National Plan for Teaching Swimming run through the Amateur Swimming Association and earn certificates and badges regularly. We also attend adventure holiday weekends at both the Calvert Trust and Bendrigg, both specialist adventure sites for disabled people.

All this would not be possible without the dedicated help from the committee who continue to fundraise to help subsidise these events.

Due to the popularity of the Blackpool Polar Bears we do have a waiting list but if you wish to join, please contact us.
