Discover the Power of Swimming through Special Olympics

Swimming is more than just a sport—it’s a transformative experience that builds confidence, promotes inclusion, and empowers individuals with disabilities to achieve their best. At the heart of the Special Olympics movement, swimming has always played a key role in creating opportunities for people of all abilities to thrive. From gaining confidence like swimming legend Michael Phelps, to finding joy and freedom in the water, swimming has the power to change lives.

In our featured videos, you'll see the inspiring stories of athletes like Taylor, one of the youngest swimmers at the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023, and Sandy Freeman, who found strength and confidence through swimming as therapy for her cerebral palsy. For Taylor, the pool is a place where she feels accepted and free to be herself, while for Sandy, swimming has been a way to show the world that she is a true athlete. These stories show how swimming fosters confidence, inclusion, and a sense of belonging for people with intellectual and physical disabilities.

Doctors suggested swimming as a therapy for symptoms of cerebral palsy; soon, Sandy Freeman began to thrive. Her mom says Special Olympics has made a huge impact on Sandy's life. Sandy agrees. "It’s made me more confident in myself and feel like I am good at something. My swimming gives me a chance to show people that I am an athlete."
